April by the Moon 2015 ~ According to Jane

For hundreds of years, gardeners have been planting and growing by the lunar cycle. Over the last five years, we have been planting with the moon and have obtained some really good results.

Crops fall into four categories;

  • Fruits - aubergines, beans, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, peppers, sweet corn, tomatoes plus the obvious tree or fruit bushes
  • Flowers - all flowers, artichokes, broccoli and cauliflowers
  • Roots - basically anything that is edible below the ground, such as asparagus, beetroot, carrots, celeriac, garlic, onions, potatoes, parsnip, radishes, rhubarb, shallots and turnips
  • Leaves - anything that is leafy and edible above ground, such as herbs, salads, kohlrabi, leeks and brassicas

What can you do by the Moon in April

There are so many plants that can be sown this month that the best thing to do is to get out the packets that you want to sow and follow the dates below for each of the categories.

Peas and broad beans can be sown in April in cells or cardboard tubes (to protect them from mice) or if you prfer, straight into the gound. They will easily germinate in a cold greenhouse for planting out later. The shop has stocks of early peas and broad beans and this year including Alderman (a climbing pea) a prolific cropper and easy to harvest.

For advice on the peas that we stock and how to sow them, click here for our pea growing guide

Sow under protection courgettes, cucumbers, pumpkins, melons, peppers and tomatoes.

Dates for sowing are  1st, 10th, 11th, 19th, 28th and 29th April.

Dates for sowing are 5th, 6th, 7th, 15th, 16th, 23rd and 24th April.

The ground should be warmed up now for you to sow beetroot, garlic, turnips, parsnips, radish and early carrots. This is also the time to finish planting your spuds.

Onion and shallot sets can also be sown now and are in stock in the shop.

Hopefully, your seed potatoes are chitted and you can finish planting them in April; click here for the potato growing guide

Sow under protection celariac.

Dates for sowing roots are  2nd, 3rd, 12th, 13th, 14th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 30th April.

Sow outdoors brussels, cabbage, leeks, spinach, chard and towards the end of the month, salads. Sow under protection herbs and celery.

Dates for sowing are 8th, 9th, 18th, 25th, 26th and 27th April.

What other jobs can you do in April?

If you dug a trench for your runner beans, keep filling it with your vegetable and fruit waste. Rake a good general fertilser into the soil to give an extra boost before sowing; growmore is a good all round fertliser. Do not over water your plants and veg, whilst it is dry, most plants will be fine. A weekly water on those with surface roots, such as onions and shallots is ample. The more that you water, the less likely the roots are to grow down to find moisture and you also leach out the nutrients too.

Keep an eye out for frosts and fleece as necessary or keep in the cold frame.

The weeds are growing, so let's keep hoeing!!!
